Tech Sharks Place in Competition at OSUThe Tech Sharks Underwater Robotics team placed second and won an award for Best Design at the Underwater Robotics Buckeye Regional Competition. The event took place at the Ohio State McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the Ohio State University campus on May 5.
Mason High School seniors Ryan Doerrer, Juan Carlos Gaudiano, and junior Michael Vacarcel made up the team.
"Two years ago I made the best decision to start an underwater robotics team. After inspiration from the movie Spare Parts, I did not only start a robotics team, but a family," explained Gaudiano. "We have achieved so many milestones as a team. We placed second for two consecutive years at the state Buckeye Underwater Robotics competition and have been given four other awards for our merits.”
To prepare for this event, the Team met every Friday and Saturday to build and code their robot. Gaudiano's father is an engineer and was the team mentor, giving advice on how to improve the robot.
"The last two weeks before the competition the team worked so hard to prepare that we didn’t sleep for 3 nights straight!" added Gaudiano.
The MATE ROV competition is about student learning and is designed to be an event that challenges students to apply the physics, math, electronics, and engineering skills they are learning in the classroom to solving problems from the marine workplace.
