Schutte Named Kiwanis Student of the MonthMason High School senior Benjamin Schutte was recognized as The Kiwanis Club of Mason's April Student of the Month. Schutte was nominated by MHS psychologist Jeff Schlaeger.
"Ben Schutte is a wonderful example of a senior leader at Mason High School. The way Ben carries himself every day as a young man who is both professional and spirited. He can be fun and engage others while simultaneously being tremendously respectful to all students and staff," shared Schlaeger. "Many students look up to Ben – I know this through watching interactions in the hallways but also through multiple stories students shared of why they were drawn to applying for the SIBS program. Ben’s name came up more than any others. He is a dedicated and spiritual person who was a senior captain of the Varsity basketball team, and one of four leaders of the Black Hole – our student section that supports all of our Comet teams."

Schutte is also a youth group leader and a member of Young Life, roles that clearly show he has a very mature way of carrying himself. Most recently, Ben put countless hours into the application process for SIBS and was one of eight seniors who read through hundreds of applications, scheduled and conducted group interviews, and helped make decisions on acceptances. Just two days after the basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs, he stayed at MHS until 7:30pm making sure things were done correctly. Ben brings it on the court as well as in the classroom, carrying a 4.2 weighted grade point average."

Ben will be attending the University of Cincinnati this Fall. While he has narrowed his major to a couple options, he is "the type of young man who you would want making long-range leadership decisions," added Schlaeger.

On April 27, the Kiwanis Club presented Schutte with $50 and a certificate commemorating his achievement. Ben's parents, Robert and Betsy, assistant principal Dion Reyes, and nominating teacher Schlaeger joined the Kiwanians in recognizing Schutte's accomplishments. The Mason Kiwanis Club meets weekly at noon at the Houston Restaurant in Mason.
