MHS Junior Scores Perfect 36 on ACT

Alex Wang has achieved perfection.
The Mason High School junior earned the highest possible score, a perfect 36, on the October ACT. To put it in perspective, in 2016, 2.1 million U.S. high school students took the exam and only 2,235 nationwide earned the highest possible composite score of 36, according to ACT.
"I was hoping for a high score, but wasn’t aiming for a 36. [Getting a perfect score] is not that big of a deal, it just feels good knowing that it went well. It doesn’t say how smart someone is - I just had a better day of taking a test,” explained Wang.
The ACT tests students in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each section has a possible score of 1 to 36. The composite score is the student's average score of all four sections. Wang scored a perfect 36 on each section. ACT test scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges.
Wang credited his rigorous courses for preparing him well, and said he didn’t do any prep classes.
"I looked at sample questions and tried to get a feeling for the time, but I think paying attention in class is good enough," he said.
Wang is co-captain of MHS’s student-directed Science Olympiad team, and also competes with Speech and Debate.
"I’m kind of obsessed with Science Olympiad right now. Ohio is a really competitive state and the top two teams go to nationals. Mason has come in third place, and I hope this is the year [that we can make it to nationals]," he declared.
Wang is the son of Wei Wang and Xiaoging Li of Mason.
