Hurks Named Kiwanis April Student of the MonthMason High School senior Kennedy Hurks was recognized as The Kiwanis Club of Mason's April Student of the Month. Hurks was nominated by MHS teacher Pat George.

“In November, she was a guest speaker at a whole-day meeting of the district's Inclusive Excellence teams; a colleague told me that she had the audience hanging on her every honest word," shared George. "She is also a scholar and in January, she was the only one in her class to choose the most challenging novel that I offered my students for a unit on the interface between humanity and technology. Our conversations about the novel were rich and thought-provoking."

A Mason Inclusion Club leader, she has worked hard to empower others to share their stories. In the fall, she will be studying chemical engineering at North Carolina A & T University.

On April 11, the Kiwanis Club presented Hurks with $100, a Kiwanis bell, and a certificate commemorating her achievement. Kennedy's mother Natalie, assistant principal Amy Hull, and nominator George joined the Kiwanians in recognizing Kennedy's accomplishments. The Mason Kiwanis Club meets weekly at noon at the Houston Restaurant in Mason.
